Day 302 of wisdom
“Correction does much, but encouragement does more.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Mistakes are a part of man's life, everyone is bound to make them at one point in their life, but a mistake is not yet a mistake until one repeats it. Correction is the act of calling the wrong to attention and making them realise the path taken was not right and should be amended. Corrections are implemented to help the doer of wrong retrace their steps, and it must be done with brevity and conciseness or else it would lose its essence, as Hosea Ballou would say, "Brevity and conciseness are the parents of correction."
Correction is very important to our growth and development but, encouragement does much more than correction does. If correction is an addition to our strength, encouragement is a multiplication of our strength. Whatever we do when corrected, we do with the consciousness of not making the same errors we were corrected for, but whatever we do when encouraged we do with courage and confidence, knowing we are trusted and believed to be able to execute perfectly what we have embarked on.
As human beings we sometimes want to shield ourselves from taking corrections, but we must realise that no one knows it all, and as Aniekee Tochukwu Ezekiel shared, "Instead of avoiding criticisms, make criticisms work for you." criticisms are a form of correction when it is constructive and intended to help you grow. In the words of Carmine Savastano who said, "Remember we are all human and can make mistakes that we should correct. However, no one should ever imagine that other people’s mistakes justify or lessen theirs." we must see our own mistakes as ours, correct them adequately and work towards becoming a better person rather than trying to justify them with other people's mistakes or lessen its effect.
Our deepest craving is having someone who will tell us we can do something that we know deep within us that we are well capable of doing. As Ralph Waldo Emerson would say, "Treat a man as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he could be, and he will become what he should be." When you encourage a man, you are treating him as he should be and he will become what he should be.
