Day 290 of wisdom

“The absence of alternatives clears the mind marvelously.”

Henry Kissinger

If man knew he had no alternative to what he has, he would not bother himself about looking for anything else, he will be sincerely satisfied with what he has, but the reality of alternatives has put men on their toes in search of a better, more convenient and comfortable life. As Maya Angelou once said, "Children's talent to endure stems from their ignorance of alternatives." Only the ignorance of alternatives can keep one from seeking alternatives, and make him endure the status quo.

A world without alternative is a world without problems, there will be no option, so, there will be nothing to clamour for, except that which one already has. War would have been a norm if there was no peace; hatred would have been a norm if there was no love; famine, and hunger would have been a norm if there was no food, nor abundance of food. There is always an alternative to every situation, it may not be an easy one but it is quite an attainable one.

Sometimes, alternatives are difficult to get, they may even be intentionally ceased by people who have it and want to keep it exclusively theirs, they intend to keep it amongst a very few who will benefit excessively from it. This is a deliberate act to keep people incapacitated and weak, making them to beg for what rightfully should be theirs. You must fill yourself with hope of the better alternative, you must fight for what you know is best for you even if you haven't experienced it before, you must not be weary until you get what is rightfully yours.

Jodi Picoult once said, "Choices are funny things, ask a native tribe that has eaten grubs and roots forever if they are unhappy, and they will shrug. But give them filet mignon and truffle sauce and then ask them to go back to living off the land, and they will always be thinking of that gourmet meal. If you don't know there's an alternative, you can't miss it." But once an alternative is known, seen, perceived, heard, and it is better than the status quo it will surely be missed, and earnestly craved for. We will continue to crave for the alternative of our dreams.
