Day 291 of wisdom
“One thing you can’t hide – is when you’re crippled inside.”
John Lennon
Disability is not a physical phenomenon, it is a mental condition. Being physically disabled is just being differently-abled when the disability does not limit the mental ability. True disability is when a complete bodied man thinks he cannot do a thing; it is when one gives excuse for what he should do, expecting another to do it for him. Physical disability is not very visible as mental and internal disabilities. The mind of a man is the source of whatever he does, if he is crippled in his mind, he can do nothing at all even if he is whole bodily.
In an essay titled “Attitudes About People with Disabilities” Benjamin Snow wrote, “Disability is natural. We must stop believing that disabilities keep a person from doing something. Because that’s not true... Having a disability doesn’t stop me from doing anything.” disabilities are ot licence not to do anything one wants to do, wishes to do or should do, it is only a challenge to do those things in a different way from others, it is a challenge to kick the mind awake and into action, to see beyond what our physical bodies can do for us and consider what we can do for our bodies.
Nick Vujicic was born without limbs, his birth put him at a seemingly disadvantaged position but he never allowed his lack of limbs limit his life, he once said, “I am officially disabled, but I am truly enabled because of my lack of limbs. My unique challenges have opened up unique opportunities to reach so many in need.” His disability became a blessing to him and many others because he was not ready to allow his physical disability affect his mental ability.
Cobhams Asuquo was born blind, today he is one of Nigeria's most talented producer, and artiste; Stevie Wonder attained legendary status as a musician and singer-songwriter despite being born blind; American author, political activist, and lecturer, Helen Keller was both deaf and blind and eventually became the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree paving way for many others like her; Stephen Hawking, Ralph Braun, Frida Kahlo, John Nash, Andrea Boccelli, Aaron Fotheringham, Yinka Ayefele, and many more are people who in spite of their physical disabilities, some not from birth never gave up their pursuit for a better life, they never gave in to the disability of the body, but strengthened themselves from within to become legends, and inspiration in their own right to everyone. There is no disability except in your mind, and that is the worst kind of all.
