Day 279 of wisdom

“The greatest use of a life is to spend it on something that will outlasts it.”

William James

A life spent in gathering and accruing personal wealth to one's self without tangible impact on other people's life is not a well lived life, no matter how wealthy such a one becomes. The true purpose of life is to live a life of purpose, and a purpose that does not supercede one's personal gains is not a worthy purpose. One who has not found a purpose for his life, must as a matter of urgency begin the ultimate search for purpose, and the one who have found purpose must work day and night in consistent pursuit of fulfilling that purpose.

All men die, but their deeds never die, the deeds men do live long after they have gone. What a man does in deeds are determined by the purpose of that man. Our minds must be completely occupied with the thoughts of the kind of legacies and memories we wish to leave behind. We must not be drawn into pursuing another man's dreams, and fulfilling another man's purpose unless our purpose is to help him fulfil his purpose. Every man was created for a specific purpose, and failing to achieve that purpose is failing the the Giver of purpose, the universe, one's country, family, all who rely on us to achieve their own purpose, and one's self.

When one dies and all that can be said, or remembered about that person was that he lived, such person did not truly live but, when one dies and a lot are being said about his deeds, the people he helped, the impact he had on people, how well he did what he did, and what more he would have done if he was still living, then such a person has lived a purposeful life. As Mahatma Gandhi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Service to others is the real definition of purpose.

Ralph Waldo Emerson also said, "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." What do you live for, yourself? How do you want to be remembered? What are you doing to make the world a better place for others to live in? What you do for yourself dies with you, but what you do for others live long after you have gone, make wise choices, live a purpose driven life, and immortality will trail you even in death.
