Day 289 of wisdom
“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”
Aristotle
Thoughts are primarily the products of another man's perception, no one can force another man's thought into acceptance for anyone else. Every man has the right to accept or dispel external thoughts, but every man also has the right to hold firmly his own thoughts. It is the mark of an enlightened mind to entertain another man's thought, but not accept it. Before we can completely discard someone's thought, we must be sure it is of no use to us, we must be certain that, that thought will not yield us our required results, or is contrary to our own thoughts and belief.
Some people allow themselves to be controlled by other men's thoughts, they live life based on what someone else thinks is right or wrong for them, thereby leaving their progress, and success in the hands of other men. On the other hand, some does not care to consider if the thoughts shared with them is of any real value or importance, they just discard without proper scrutiny. A tree does not make a forest, so can a man not succeed on his own, one who would go far must go with people of like minds.
A man whose opinions and thoughts are unchanging and rigid is a man who will struggle to move forward, his mind will stay stagnant, he will not be refreshed by new ideas, and varying thoughts from other bright minds from whom he can weigh his thoughts and opinions on a balance. As William Blake would say, "The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
We must always keep an open mind, and allow rationality and logic be our basic guide towards accepting or disregarding thoughts, opinions, and ideas of others. We don't always have to accept, but we must always give a chance for everyone to express themselves and we must be ready to entertain their thoughts but not necessarily accept them. We should not always arrive at conclusions having not examined all facts and factors, and proving beyond reasonable doubts the validity of the subject matter, this is the mark of a truly enlightened mind.
