366 days of wisdom (June 20, 2020)

Day 172 of wisdom

“When speculation has done its worst, two and two still make four.”

Samuel Johnson

Speculation is the forming of a theory or conjecture without firm evidence; the contemplation or consideration of some subject; a supposition, theory. or opinion arrived at through speculating;  investment involving high risk but also the possibility of high profits. In all the definitions given afore, a common basis summarizes it all: the presence of uncertainty.

Critical decision making must be reached through a process which  involves finding facts, and figures, being certain, and sure of the factors, and circumstances that surrounds the situation at hand, or the events unfolding. Attempting to make a critical decision based on mere speculation could amount to a disastrous ending, which could lead to loss of time, investment, resources, and capital.

Time is a revealer, it reveals, confirms, and authenticates whatever is true, and factual. In the words of Marcus Tullius Cicero who said, "time destroys the speculation of men, but it confirms nature." Speculations cannot stand the test of time, it will surely and definitely crash as time unfolds, but that which is true, and factual will always stand.

Mark Twain once said, "there are two times in a man's life when he should not speculate: when he can't afford it, and when he can." Speculation has destroyed far more people, businesses, and organizations than it has ever created, or established. Their are always two possible outcomes to any endeavour, it is either the positive, or the negative; the expected, or the unexpected; the acceptable, or the unacceptable. It is therefore left to us to get the facts, and act accordingly, because at the end if the day two plus two will never make six, it will still be four.
