Day 163 of wisdom

“The first great gift we can bestow on others is a good example.”

Thomas Morell

Whenever you find yourself in the front line of any endeavour, in any space the best thing you could do for those following you is to set a good example for them. Leading by example is the best way to lead, it makes leading easy as you don't need to give instructions before followers do. Lee Lacocca once said, "if you set a good example you need not worry about setting rules", once you set a good example setting rules becomes unnecessary as your example becomes the rule.

As a leader the best way to make everyone following you do what you want them to do is to start by doing it yourself. Children learn best, and faster through the examples they see from their parents, and the elderly ones around them than what they are been told, or intentionally taught to do. Children don't always become very different from their parents because they pick up their parents habit unconsciously, but more adequately, and concisely. So, the best legacy, and advice you can give your children is a good example.

Forcefully commanding, or instructing a person to do a thing might work in an instance, but making someone accept an ideal, a way of life, a phenomenon is best achieved by setting a good example. A leader who leads by example is more likely to have more committed, and loyal followers than one who forcefully instructs them to do a thing no matter how good, and pleasant that thing could be. As Dwight L. Moody said, "a good example is far better than a good precept."

Francis Bacon said, "he that gives good advice, builds with one hand; he that gives good counsel and example, builds with both; but he that gives good admonition and bad example, builds with one hand and pulls down with the other." It is up to you to decide what you want to do, and achieve, if you want to build with one hand which is not bad; build with one hand, and pull down with the other, which is effort in futility; or build with both hands. Think for yourself, and choose wisely.
