366 days of wisdom (June 19, 2020)

Day 171 of wisdom

“Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.”

Albert Einstein

One cannot attempt to establish, or keep peace by force, it will be a contradiction of what he hopes to achieve. Keeping peace comes through understanding of the existing situation, and the people involved in that situation, and understanding cannot be achieved except through dialogue. Communication is therefore a very important tool to peacemaking, and peacekeeping.

Martin Luther King opined that “Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.”

In our efforts to enthrone peace in the world around us we must be ready, willing, and committed to contribute our best to the progress, growth, development, and unity of our societies, and be willing to work with others in achieving same purpose. Daughter of the late Chief MKO Abiola, Hafsat Olaronke Abiola, once said, “Peace comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to contribute the best that they have and all that they are.”

If the world must have peace we must see everyone as our brother irrespective of race, colour, tribe, language, ethnicity, creed, age, gender, geographic location, status, class, or social standing; we must see everyone as partners, and coworkers in the building of a peaceful world. As much as the world needs great men, and women, business tycoons, and leaders of vision, the world need more peacemakers, more love givers, more light. Darkness can eradicate darkness, war, force, and conflict cannot establish peace, only peace can bring peace.
