366 days of wisdom (August 13, 2020)

 Day 226 of wisdom

“There is no neutral ground on which one ought to stand in a time of tyranny .”

Walter Carrington

One can not but agree with Edmund Burke when he said, “the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.” Our world as we have it now, and our best minds, most valuable people, and priceless brains are falling away, running away, and wasting away because for a very long time the good people among us have refused to speak out against evil.

There can be no peace, progress, nor growth when evil men are at the helms of affairs in any society. The only beneficiaries of the system that would be created in such societies will be close allies, and pallies of those in power. The common wealth, and resources of the people will be to the advantage of a minority. The system will become unbearable for the powerless, and fragile in that society.

Former United States Ambassador to Nigeria, late Walter C. Carrington once said in an interview, “there is no neutral ground on which one ought to stand in a time of tyranny. I felt a duty to speak. There was no way I could remain silent during the reign of Nigeria's worst military dictatorship I believe an ambassador is an envoy not only to the government to which he or she is accredited but also to its people.” Despite being an ambassador whose allegiance must be solely to his government, and forbidden to meddle with host nation's affairs, in 1993, he spoke out against the tyrannical rule of then head of state General Sani Abacha.

Neutrality in a tyrannic regime is a support for that regime, and that makes one no better than the tyrant. It is high time good people stand up for the truth, for justice, and for good governance where every citizen is as important as any other person, this is a just cause, and it is worth fighting for.
