Perfection is an illusion

NO ONE IS PERFECT

Mastery can very well be attained, but the very idea of perfection is an illusion. It is a destination with no known path, no finish line, no specific metrics; as a matter of fact, perfection is a mirage that we can never get a grip of. We can see perfection in scripted scenes, in fiction, and in our minds, and we crave for them to manifest in our daily lives, but we are not built for perfection, but for continuous growth.

Rather than pursuing perfection, we can go for mastery, which cannot also be achieved through ease. Imperfection is not a flaw in our design, it is the very essence of us. It is not something we should fight, but something to embrace. We should avoid the temptation of measuring ourselves with the tape of perfection that exists in our mind, or the fictional stories we read and see. We should set reasonable standards for ourselves, and work towards achieving what is achievable.

Our cracks are not just empty spaces, they are the openings that lets light get in, and just as importantly, where our own light shines out to touch others. Our mistakes are the laboratories of our lives. It is through saying the wrong thing that we learn the value of the right one. It is through failing at a task that we learn resilience, strategy, and humility. It is through getting lost that we discover new paths we never would have chosen.

Stop trying to smoothen your rough edges to fit a template that does not exist. Perfection is a mask, and an obstruction, but imperfection is the bridge that takes us across; it is the common ground where we all meet, in all our flawed, beautiful, struggling humanity; it is the very thing that allows us to see ourselves in one another, to connect, to forgive, and to love; and in the end, a life rich with real connection and courageous authenticity is infinitely more magnificent than a perfect one could ever be.

To a better you, Kamikun John.
