NO COURAGE IN CERTAINTY

On a journey of predetermined outcomes, where the end is known, and there is no reason for doubt, courage becomes dormant, unnecessary, and untested. True bravery does not flourish in the light of certainty but emerges from the shadows of the unknown. To act when the outcome is guaranteed is mere routine, a mechanical step forward devoid of risk or revelation; but to march forward in the midst of ambiguity, to take a leap when the landing is obscure, that is the essence of valour.

If we had been aware of the details of every journey, if we had seen the direction of winds, and waves; the magnitude of turbulence had been known before we embark on a journey, the journey would be a stroll, there would be no surprises, hence, nothing heroic about the journey. Many have stayed in comfort, and have only lived in their certainty, scared to explore the abyss, they never really experienced life. However, those who have dared to venture, irrespective of what may lie ahead, have returned heroes, decorated by scars of the battles they have fought and won.

If the applause were assured, they would mean little when they eventually come; if the ventures were foolproof, their success would be hollow. Courage thrives in vulnerability, in the space where fear and hope collide. To live wholeheartedly, you must embrace uncertainty, to shield yourself with guarantees is to live half-heartedly, armoured against both defeat and triumph.

We don't have to live in recklessness, take actions blindly, without giving deep thought to what we are doing or going into, that would be folly, and not fortitude. We must find the balance in whatever we do, gathering enough knowledge to inform our steps, but not so much as to eliminate the thrill of the unknown. We have to embark on every journey, not with guaranteed victory, but with the courage to envision a successful ending.

To a better you, Kamikun John.
