Leading by example.

LEADERSHIP IS LIVED NOT EXERCISED

In a recent interview with BBC news Yoruba, HRH King James Oladipo Buremoh Aroko-Ola, the Onidera of Idera land in Kwara state, also known as "Ladi the African Tiger" a one time World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion, narrated how despite being a king, he would go to the United States of America to drive the New York Sight seeing buses for six months in a year, and come back to govern his people of Idera land for the other six months. He did this to be able to cater for the needs of his family and those he rules over.

As a King he never saw rolling up his sleeves to get the job done or started as a challenge, he was always ready to lead by example. These acts and actions never reduced him or made him smaller than he is by any standards, in fact, it has made him the kind of leader that the people want, and are ready to follow. He has exemplified true leadership, by living out what he would expect from people, and not just by telling people what he wants them to do.

As leaders, we must be ready to lead the kind of life we want to see our followers live; we must be ready to be the first one rolling up our sleeves and getting to work; we must be ready to go the extra mile for those we lead. Leadership is not a position to be occupied, but a responsibility to be carried out; it is not a title to be honoured, but a call to service; leadership is an opportunity to show the world how to do the right thing, the right way.

Those who call themselves leaders must live as leaders, leading the frontline towards the collective vision of the group, and not just exercising authority over those who they lead. Empathy, and compassion are two necessary qualities a good leader must have, they will be needed to help the led. Don't be the one who rocks the boat, when others are rowing, be the one who challenge others to row faster to increase the speed and get to the destination faster.
