THE INSATIABILITY OF HUMAN WANTS.
Man's want, they say are insatiable, but the insatiability of man's wants can be met, subdued and controlled. We cannot satisfy our cravings for continuous pleasure, momentary satisfaction can pause these cravings, but in a very short time the desire to have more, receive more, will take over our minds. It is not uncommon to desire more despite all we have but, our desire must be moderate and within means. We must control the desire for more when it begins to get out of hand, and there is only one antidote to that: Contentment.
The insatiability of man's want is fueled by greed, and in the words of Erich Fromm "Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction." As long as we remain subscribed to the grip of greed, we will never be satisfied with anything irrespective of how much of that thing we have. There is no evil in desiring something, the only evil is that we are not satisfied with the little that we have, and if greed is allowed, it will destroy a man before he has the opportunity to be satisfied.
Contentment never kills the desire for more, but it subdues greed and the desire to get what we want at all cost. In our pursuit for more, we must be decent, considerate of others, and careful, we must not allow our desires to outweigh our means, and force us into doing the unreasonable. Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed." There is abundance in the world for everyone's need to be met, but attempting to satisfy your own greed would mean that some people will be denied their basic needs.
The world will be a better place, should everyone be contented with what they have, and what they are able to gather for themselves without depriving others. The economic rot, poverty, and hunger in the world today is basically established upon the insistence of some individuals, countries, economies, and conglomerates on the satisfaction of their own desires and greed rather than the even distribution of the common wealth of the people. We must kill greed and uphold contentment, we must make the world a better place for all.
