SERGEY BRIN
Brin co-founded Google in 1998 with Larry Page, building on the PageRank algorithm the two developed as Stanford graduate students. Rather than ranking web pages by keyword frequency alone, PageRank treated links between pages as votes of authority, producing search results that were dramatically more relevant than anything available at the time. That single insight reordered how thoroughly humanity could access its own accumulated knowledge, collapsing the effort required to find information from hours of directory-browsing to a matter of seconds. It is difficult to overstate how thoroughly this reshaped daily life, research, commerce, and journalism since then.
Brin's contributions extended well beyond the founding algorithm. He played a central role in scaling Google's infrastructure to index a web that grew from millions to trillions of pages, and he pushed the company into ambitious adjacent territory, Google Books, which attempted to digitize the world's libraries; Google Street View and Maps, which mapped physical space at a planetary scale; and early bets on self-driving cars through what became Waymo.
The economic reordering Brin helped set in motion was significant. Google's advertising model, built on the back of superior search, created a new engine for monetizing information itself and became a template that reshaped how media, retail, and countless other industries generate revenue online. Alphabet's scale made Brin one of the wealthiest people in the world, and Google's dominance in search, email, mobile operating systems through Android, and cloud infrastructure gave a company he co-founded outsized influence over how billions of people navigate the internet daily.
Brin did not simply build a better search engine; he built the connective infrastructure through which much of the world now finds, verifies, and monetizes information, and in doing so helped create both the extraordinary conveniences and the concentrated corporate power that define the contemporary internet.
