GRACE HOPPER
Hopper earned a PhD in mathematics from Yale at a time when few women entered the field, then joined the U.S. Navy Reserve during World War II, where she was assigned to work on the Harvard Mark I, one of the earliest electromechanical computers. That wartime posting set the trajectory for the rest of her career. Rather than treating computing as a narrow mathematical exercise, she came to see it as a communication problem, one that could be solved by building tools that let people describe what they wanted rather than manually encoding every instruction in machine-specific notation.
In 1952 while working on the UNIVAC I, she developed the first compiler, a program capable of translating human-readable instructions into machine code. This was a genuinely radical idea at the time. Many of her peers doubted a computer could reliably translate symbolic language into functioning code at all. Hopper pressed forward anyway, and the compiler concept she pioneered became the foundation for nearly all subsequent programming languages.
Her team's work directly led to FLOW-MATIC, an early English-like programming language, which in turn shaped the design of COBOL, the business-oriented language that would go on to run payroll, banking, and government systems for decades and, in some cases, still does today.
Beyond specific inventions, Hopper's deeper legacy was philosophical: she insisted that programming should be accessible rather than the exclusive domain of a mathematical priesthood. She championed the idea that code should resemble English, arguing that businesses and the military needed programmers who could focus on solving problems rather than wrestling with binary and machine-specific syntax. This democratizing instinct helped open computing as a field to a much broader range of people, including many women who entered programming in its early decades before the field later narrowed considerably.
Her decades of Navy service, from which she eventually retired as a rear admiral, also gave her an institutional platform to advocate for standardization across computer systems. By insisting computers could be taught to understand something closer to English, she helped lay the groundwork for the accessible, high-level programming languages that now underpin nearly all software, from operating systems to the app on a modern phone.
