Patricia grew up in a working-class family that pushed her toward science at a time when few doors were open to Black women in medicine. She went on to become the first Black person to complete a residency in ophthalmology at New York University, and later the first woman to chair an ophthalmology residency program in the United States. Those firsts were not incidental; they shaped what she chose to work on, because she kept encountering the same pattern in clinics, Black patients experiencing blindness from glaucoma and cataracts at rates far higher than white patients, often simply because they were not getting seen or treated in time.

That observation led her to co-found the discipline of "community ophthalmology," a model that sent volunteers into underserved neighborhoods to screen people for eye disease and connect them to care before conditions became irreversible. It was a simple idea, but it reshaped how public health thought about vision loss as a preventable, equity-driven problem rather than a fixed biological fact. This work alone would have made her a significant figure in American medicine; but Bath is best remembered for a technical breakthrough that came out of her frustration with the limitations of existing cataract surgery.

In the early 1980s, cataract removal was often imprecise and traumatic to the eye, relying on mechanical grinding tools that could damage surrounding tissue. Bath spent years developing an alternative; a laser-based device and technique for removing cataracts with far greater precision and less trauma to the eye. In 1988, she received a patent for what she called the Laserphaco Probe, making her the first Black woman to receive a medical patent in the United States. The device and the surgical approach it enabled were adopted internationally and restored sight to patients who had been blind for decades in some cases, a rare instance of a single inventor's tool having immediate, measurable impact on human suffering.

Bath deliberately tied invention to access. She did not simply patent a device and move on; she used her position to argue, repeatedly and publicly, that "eyesight is a basic human right," and she built the "American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness", which she co-founded in 1976, explicitly to close the gap between what medicine could do and who actually received it. Her research also pushed back against assumptions in her field, showing that some of the racial disparities in blindness rates were not primarily genetic but structural, tied to unequal access to screening and treatment.
