THE MAN WHO CHANGED THE WORLD THROUGH PRINCIPLED RELIGIOUS LEADERSHIP
W. F. KUMUYI
It began with fifteen people in a university in 1973. While still teaching at the University of Lagos, Kumuyi started a Bible study group that rapidly expanded, and by the early 1980s had grown into a large congregation, which launched the formal beginning of the Deeper Life Bible Church. By 1988, membership had surged to 50,000, making it one of the largest Christian congregations globally.
What made him extraordinary was not merely the scale, but the method. He consistently preached holiness, repentance, and a life committed to Scripture, and even as the ministry grew into a global movement, his focus remained steady. In an age increasingly dominated by prosperity theology and religious spectacle, his refusal to dilute his message became its own form of moral authority.
Under his leadership, Deeper Life expanded beyond Nigeria and Africa into Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. His influence leapt past the precincts of his own church, moving into other denominations across Africa and into other continents, carried further by his Global Crusade with Kumuyi initiative.
In 2013, Foreign Policy Magazine listed him among the 500 Most Powerful People on Earth, a remarkable recognition for a man who had explicitly rejected the trappings of worldly power. Perhaps his deepest impact is ethical rather than statistical. His righteous, humble, and wealth-rejecting approach to leadership has been responsible for sustaining his organisation for decades, and has produced a generation of new leaders who have embraced his ethics of a disciplined lifestyle and palpable holiness. Kumuyi has proved, across five decades and millions of followers, that faithfulness, sustained long enough, lived with full integrity, is a kind of revolution that can turn the world upside down.
